There are many ways to support your favourite indie screen venue during shutdown (whilst also having a good time!). One of our favourites is to step aside from our usual streaming subscriptions to stream something that genuinely gives money back to the venues we’re all currently excluded from.

In the next in our series of posts looking at what’s streaming from London’s favourite indie cinemas, we have a look at the Rio Cinema, a venue we know well from some very early hours projecting midnight movies with our wonderful friend Ranjit S. Ruprai aka SUPAKINO back in 2019 (see our archive of MIDNIGHT EXCESS for info).

Rio Cinema Online offers a range of new releases (scroll down for a roundup of what’s there right now) and a handpicked selected of themed programmes. Currently streaming in the latter are queer cinema (titles include MONSOON, THE WATERMELON WOMAN, & SAUVAGE to be joined soon by 1985, AND THEN WE DANCED, & TOM OF FINLAND); 5 star features (which we presume to mean ‘critically acclaimed’ rather than featuring the 1980s family pop combo… including ETERNAL BEAUTY, FALLING + Q&A, THE JUNIPER TREE, SUMMER 1993, & RAY & LIZ); documentaries (including iHUMAN, THE MOLE AGENT, FANTASTIC FUNGI + Q&A, IN MY BLOOD IT RUNS, MANSFIELD 66/67); and, international cinema (including A GIRL FROM MOGADISHU, COCOON, ALICE, EASTERN, LOVE CHILD, & 3 FACES).

Some of the Rio’s films are streamed through Vimeo. It’s easy to set up an account.
