NEWS FROM ACROSS LONDON’S ALTERNATIVE CINEMA SCENE.

This Friday sees the return of Barbican Centre and Rich Mix to our listings – welcome back folks! Both venues (re)open exclusively with TENET, Barbican joining the original format club with a week of 35MM screenings (see TENET // CINEMA+ sections for full venue listings, below). In other reopening news, we’re also delighted to see Regent Street Cinema has announced a restart date of 01 October. But there’s still a long way to go…

It’s a week when venue-based special event screenings from indie exhibitors are starting to pick up speed. It’s great to see folk like Deeper Into Movies, We Are Parable and DISPATCH FMI return to the darkness. Thursday is looking almost hectic… Ciné-Real 16MM Film Club’s serial screenings of JAWS have proved so popular, The Castle Cinema has added another date (now booking 10, 13, 16 & 24 SEP). Read our enthusiastic writeup of their unforgettable lockdown screening of KING KONG from an empty Castle Cinema as a reminder of where we’ve (just…) come from.

TENET continues to dominate the landscape, taking over outdoor cinema screens too with a two-week residency at  Troubadour Drive In (see CINEMA+ listings for details). Rooftop Film Club’s Drive-In Film Club will dip its headlights this week (07 SEP), taking a temporary break until they return in October. Luna Cinema wraps their Gunnersbury Park venue this week (08 SEP) with no further London dates announced. As the arrival of Autumn moves Londoners indoors, Backyard Cinema returns to Wandsworth with their THE WINTER NIGHT GARDEN (which is looking pretty SOLD OUT! as usual – see our CINEMA+ listings for the last available tickets at the time of posting).

New SEASON arrivals include a LUIS BUÑUEL special programme at Ciné Lumière, which overlaps in a beautiful cinematic Venn diagram with their ongoing tribute season, THE MANY FACETS OF MICHEL PICCOLI. Open City Festival joins our listings this week (09 to 15 SEP) while the amazing volunteer crew at Peckham & Nunhead Free Film Festival continue their mainly online works (we’ve sprinkled some highlight links throughout our daily schedules). BFI will announce the full programme for this year’s London Film Festival (07 to 18 OCT) at an online event (08 SEP) which we hope to be reporting from. Excitingly, London Korean Film Festival returns to Genesis Cinema with a teaser screening of KIM JI-YOUNG, BORN 1982 (10 SEP – see SINGLE-O EXHIBIT listings).

Looking a little further ahead, it’s great to see our good friend The Celluloid Sorceress return to the darkness with her impeccable 35MM projections: GROSSE POINTE BLANK 35MM spools at Genesis Cinema on 24 SEP.

IF WE HAD TO SEE JUST ONE EVENT THIS WEEK, IT WOULD BE…

Our first special mention of the week goes to a Protected Group Screening of HOPE GAP at Watermans (07 SEP), which provides those at greater risk of COVID-19 with a safer screening environment. We think that’s pretty darn wonderful. Our second mention goes to the celebratory screenings of BLACK PANTHER at both Genesis Cinema and Picturehouse Central following the untimely death of Chadwick Boseman. See CINEMA+ listings for full links and details.

Our Featured Attraction Of The Week is actually our special mention from last week, the release of Ladj Ly’s LES MISÉRABLES. We’ve listed it at Ciné Lumière where you can see it daily from 04 to 17 SEP – where better to watch a French language film in London, right? – but you can find the film across all your favourite indie venues. Give them – and a fascinating and timely film – your support this week, and let us know how you get along.

See you in darkness,

RADIANT CIRCUS

NEW EXHIBITS & ATTRACTIONS AT RADIANTCIRCUS.COM

DO YOU EXHIBIT? This is a shout out to all London-based alternative cinema exhibitors, the people we like to call “the sommeliers of the dark”. You might promote your own film nights, operate as part of a film collective or film club, or help programme a volunteer-run festival or venue. You probably don’t earn a living screening movies but you had a regular screening habit before shutdown and always project with passion.

… If that sounds like you, and you’re keen to get back into the darkness, stay tuned for an announcement about a new initiative from @radiantcircus. We’d like to help.
