SCREEN GUIDE: What’s on in London this week [28 JUL to 03 AUG 2023]

Our RADIANT CIRCUS guide to what’s on in London this week across DIY, indie & alternative cinema, including one-off screen events, film seasons, film festivals & new releases.

Token Homo’s cult film night Bar Trash continues with MONSTER MAYHEM! at Rule Zero & Genesis Cinema. Booking Now!

Welcome to another screen week!

Stories of the box office impact of Barbenheimer on the indie cinema industry are heart-warming; record takings, passionate audiences and, if the booking pages I’ve browsed for this Screen Guide are anything to go by, every chance that the enthusiasm will continue for another week.

New releases are understandably hesitant to take this on, but I’m excited about new horror TALK TO ME, and Sofia Coppola’s THE VIRGIN SUICIDES is released in a new 4K Restoration (links all the way at the bottom of this guide…).

Rep and outdoor seasons continue to project strongly, and as we tip over into a new month, there are some new attractions. BFI launches into BE GAY DO CRIME, REBEL CINEMA: OUSMANE SEMBÈNE AT 100 and adds more titles to MAKING MAGIC: 100 YEARS OF DISNEY and their usual classics strand. ICA pays timely tribute to JANE BIRKIN and begins DOWN & DIRTY: AMERICAN D.I.Y. RESTORED and new queer strand, OUT ON TUESDAY. New film club Cinema Mentiré launches a season of three experimental documentaries, OLHAR PERIFERICO, at The Cinema Museum & Hackney Baths. I’ll list everything I can find when the monthly roundup comes out. Scroll down for this week’s info and links.

Given this week’s outpouring of love for the live cinema experience, I’ve chosen an indie film festival as my Featured Attraction of the Week. The David Lean Cinema and The Cinema Museum combine forces, unlock their film canisters and unleash the venue’s dual projectors for an exciting programme for their Films On Film Festival (29 JUL to 12 AUG).

And there we have it… RADIANT CIRCUS will be going dark for August whilst I undertake some essential maintenance (of me and of the website!). Daily and weekly guides will now be paused. My next/final post will be the AUGUST epic roundup (due out this weekend!). Regular posts will resume with the SEPTEMBER roundup. After that, weekly screen guides and daily updates will return.

Of course, you can also join me in Bar Paragon at Genesis Cinema if you fancy a weekly dose of MONSTER MAYHEM! throughout August. Remaining kaijū season highlights include THE CRATER LAKE MONSTER (02 AUG), KING KONG LIVES (09 AUG), THE BLOB 1988 (16 AUG), and GODZILLA 1998 (23 AUG).

As always, thank you for all of your support (particularly my monthly subscribers at Patreon). See you in the darkness soon, and stay safe.
