SCREEN NEWS: Genesis Cinema gets ready for al fresco drinks
As we’re getting closer to reopening dates, we’re having a look around London’s indie venues to see how they are gearing up. Our first stop is in East London with Genesis Cinema.

In a flurry of reopening energy, Genesis Cinema is converting their car park (we didn’t know they had one!) into a new beer garden. You will be able to “enjoy actual draft beer, pizza, cocktails, Prosecco WITH OTHER PEOPLE!” (emphasis their own). Bookings will be taken soon for reservations from 12 APR when outdoor hospitality will hopefully be given the green light.
The industrious East London venue is also delivering pizzas, pies, and hotdogs fresh from their kitchen via UberEats. You can get an assortment of cinema snacks and what they are calling a “cinema night in a box” including popcorn, nachos and two drinks. Of course, you will need to fetch your own make-out partner… but who doesn’t love a Cornetto and a (consenting…) cuddle in the back rows?
Finally, Genesis is currently offering hot-desking space throughout their venue for a growing community of freelancers (or anyone tired of working from home for that matter). A space costs from £3 for an hour, £5 for half a day and £10 for the full day with wifi and barista-made coffee on site.
These various steps are likely to make this historic venue even more of a destination attraction when they are allowed to reopen. Let’s hope everything goes to plan…
Until then, don’t forget you can stream something and give back to the venue at the same time. Current titles in Genesis’ online cinema include: ASSASSINS (d. Ryan White, 2020), SKATE KITCHEN (d.Crystal Moselle, 2018), SYNCHRONIC (d. Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, 2019), POLY STYRENE – I AM A CLICHÉ (d. Celeste Bell & Paul Sng, 2021) and a RADIANT CIRCUS favourite, BORDER (d. Ali Abbasi, 2018).
See you back there soon…
